What is Internal Linking?

Internal linking is the practice of linking from one page on your website to another page on the same domain. Internal links help users navigate, distribute page authority across the site, and signal to search engines which pages matter most and how topics relate. They also help search crawlers discover content — pages with no internal links pointing to them are often hard to find and rank.

Why it matters

Internal linking is the easiest SEO lever most teams ignore. Every page you publish should connect to relevant pages already on the site. Done well, it pushes new content into Google's index faster, passes authority to your money pages, and turns a flat content library into a topic cluster engine. Done poorly — or not at all — important pages sit isolated, ranking below thinner competitor pages that have a stronger internal link structure. It costs nothing. The teams that take it seriously outrank the teams that don't.

How it works

When you publish a new page, you link to it from related existing pages using descriptive anchor text — not "click here." The anchor text helps search engines understand the destination. You also link from the new page out to relevant existing content, deepening the topic cluster. Pillar pages (broad overviews) link down to cluster pages (specific subtopics), and cluster pages link back up. Tools like Screaming Frog or Ahrefs can map your internal link graph and surface orphan pages with no inbound links. The goal is a tight web where every important page is reachable in two or three clicks.
