What is AI Citation?

An AI citation is a reference an AI model includes when it generates an answer — usually a clickable link or footnote pointing to the source page it pulled from. AI citations appear in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Claude when these tools use web retrieval. They are how AI tools show their work, and they are increasingly how brands measure visibility in AI-powered search.

Why it matters

Traditional rankings tell you where you sit on a page of blue links. AI citations tell you whether you exist in the conversation. A buyer asking ChatGPT for the best headless CMS sees three to five vendors cited, and the rest do not register. There is no second page in AI search. Tracking citations across Perplexity, ChatGPT, Google Overviews, and Claude is becoming a core marketing metric — not because the volume is huge yet, but because it predicts where search is going. Brands that ignore it are flying blind on the channel growing fastest.

How it works

When an AI tool answers a query that needs fresh information, it runs a retrieval step — searching the web or a curated index — picks a handful of pages, reads them, and writes the answer with inline citations. The model favors pages that load fast, use clean HTML, have direct answers near the top, contain structured data, and come from domains it already trusts. The data is rough but useful, and the trend lines matter more than any single snapshot.
