What is Google AI Overviews?

Google AI Overviews are AI-generated answer boxes that appear above the traditional blue links on Google search results. Powered by Google's Gemini model and previously known as SGE or Search Generative Experience, they summarize information from multiple web sources and cite a handful of pages. Google AI Overviews now appear on a majority of informational queries and have reshaped what ranking on Google actually means.

Why it matters

Ranking number one used to be the goal. Now there is a zero position above you, and your traffic depends on whether the Overview cites your page or sends visitors elsewhere. Studies since the 2024 rollout show click-through rates drop 30 to 60 percent on queries that trigger an Overview. That is a structural change to organic search, not a temporary blip. Teams that still measure success by keyword rankings are watching the wrong number. The new metric is whether you get cited in the AI answer — and how often your brand name appears inside it.

How it works

When a user types a query, Google decides whether to trigger an Overview based on intent — informational queries get them, transactional ones usually do not. Gemini then retrieves a set of pages from Google's index, reads them, and synthesizes a short answer with inline citation links. The cited pages get featured at the top of the Overview, often as expandable source cards. Pages that load fast, use clear headings, contain direct answers in the first paragraph, and have strong topical authority are more likely to be pulled. Pages buried under interstitials, slow JavaScript, or vague intros tend to be skipped. The selection logic overlaps heavily with what wins featured snippets, so a single content investment usually pays off in both places.
