What is Answer Engine Optimization?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so AI-powered answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude — extract and cite your page when answering user questions. Unlike traditional SEO, where the goal is a click, AEO optimizes for being the source the model quotes. The win is brand presence inside the answer itself, even when the user never visits your site.

Why it matters

Search is splitting in two. Half the buyers still click ten blue links. The other half ask Perplexity and trust the synthesized answer. If your content isn't structured to be quotable — clear definitions, direct answers, scannable structure — you don't exist in that second world. The companies winning AEO right now are the ones writing for extraction, not just ranking. Short paragraphs. Definitions up top. Concrete examples. Schema markup. It is SEO's smarter cousin, and most marketing teams haven't noticed yet.

How it works

Answer engines pull from indexed web content, score passages for relevance and confidence, and stitch the best ones into a synthesized answer with citations. To get pulled, your pages need a direct answer in the first sentence (the format: "X is..."), tight semantic structure, schema markup so machines parse context, and topical depth so the model trusts you over a thin competitor. Pages that hedge or bury the answer get skipped. Pages that lead with a clean definition, follow with a concrete example, and link to deeper proof get cited. The mechanics are similar to featured snippets — just with more engines and higher stakes.
