What is Zero-Click Search?

Zero-click search is any search that ends without the user clicking through to a website, because the answer was visible right on the search results page. It happens through featured snippets, knowledge panels, People Also Ask boxes, and most recently Google AI Overviews. As of 2026, the majority of Google searches are zero-click, which has fundamentally changed what organic traffic looks like.

Why it matters

If you measure SEO by sessions alone, your dashboard has been getting worse for years even when your content is performing. The visibility is still there — it just stops at the SERP. The reframe is that being the source for a zero-click answer is still valuable: your brand name appears, your authority compounds, and the searches that do click through are higher intent. Pretending traffic is the only metric punishes your team for a structural change they cannot reverse. Track citations, branded search lift, and direct visits alongside sessions. That is the honest picture.

How it works

Google decides whether to answer a query directly based on intent. Informational queries like 'what is RAG' or 'tallest mountain' usually trigger a snippet or Overview. Transactional queries like 'buy running shoes' still send users to pages. To win zero-click answers, you write content with a direct answer in the first paragraph, use clear headings, mark up FAQs and how-tos with schema, and keep the page fast. The same patterns help with AI Overviews and AI Citations more broadly across ChatGPT and Perplexity. You lose the click but you own the answer, and your name sits next to the response — which still pays off in branded search lift later.
